Directions for Preemie Infant Wraps

These wraps are made to measure 8” - 12” square.   They are made for infants who are 7” or less at birth.   They can be made in many ways.  Here are just a few ideas:

Click on images for larger picture.

Simple Flannel Wrap:  Cut a piece of flannel and a piece of fabric to the desired measurement, adding ½” for seams.   Place the fabrics right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a few inches open for turning.   Turn the wrap right sides out, hand stitch the opening closed.   You can embellish the tiny quilt with embroidery stitches, machine or hand quilting, or just leave plain.

Eyelet and Flannel WrapPlace a piece of eyelet and a piece of flannel right sides together and stitch as for simple flannel wrap above.   The eyelet will allow the soft color of the flannel to show through.

Quilt Block Wrap:   Make one quilt square, adding borders if needed to make the finished block measure 8” to 12”.   Layer with batting and a fabric backing, or flannel can be used along with the quilt block to complete the tiny quilt.   Sew on a binding, turn the backing over for an edging, or sew together as described above.  Embellish with machine or hand quilting, or just leave plain.

For ALL Wraps:  On one corner, stitch a piece of 10” ribbon for closing the wrap.   On the opposite corner, measure about 4 ½” in from the corner and stitch on a second piece of ribbon.   The finished wrap can then wrap around the infant, overlapping on itself, and be tied closed.

Wraps can be as unique as the volunteers who make them.

Nurses dress the infant in these special wraps when parents lose an infant at, or shortly after, birth.  Parents are never prepared for the loss of an infant, particularly so when the birth is premature.  These wraps are used when the infant is held by parents and during the memorial service.  They are often kept by parents as one of the few keepsakes they have that were used by their infant.  For the families, these infant wraps become a meaningful remembrance of their baby.

These wraps are very special...  They take with them a message of love and caring sent by those who make them!  Thank you for caring.
