Locks of Hair Bags for Perinatal Loss

 

MATERIAL:           

 

1 Yard of Fabric

                 Poly Chiffon                     

                 Crepon Sheer                 

                 Casa Sheer            

 

Ribbon     1/8 Inch

                 

 

DIRECTIONS:

 

  1. Cut  fabric into 4 strips - each 11 inches wide

  2. Take each 11-inch strip and fold under 1 1/4 inches on both long sides for casing

  3. Sew two rows of stitching 1/4 inch apart to form casing

  4. Cut this strip into 3 1/2 inch sections (should yield 10 pieces)

  5. Fold each one in half and sew side seams

  6. Use yarn needle to put ribbon through casing creating a small hole with the needle at the side seam.

 Hospitals receive these special bags, along with tiny gowns, caps and blankets, for parents who lose an infant at, or shortly after, birth.  Parents are never prepared for the loss of an infant, particularly so following a premature birth.  These bags, caps, gowns and blankets are used while the infant is held by the parents and during the infant’s memorial service.  They are often kept as one of the few keepsakes parents have of their infant.
