Bridging People and Places Annual College Scholarship forDouble H Ranch Alumni Campers
Established in Memory of David J. Vanderzee,Founder of Willard Mountain Ski Area in Greenwich, NY |
BackgroundHollie Vanderzee, Founder of Bridging People and Places, began fundraising for this scholarship in 2001 by holding Ski-A-Thons at Willard Mountain Ski Area in memory of Dave Vanderzee. In her words, "Starting a scholarship for alumni campers at Double H Ranch in Dave's memory seemed the right thing to do. Dave taught thousands of young people to ski over three decades. He was genuinely interested in the youth who spent many hours at the ski area. Dave always found time to talk with them, offer encouragement, and listen. He had a wonderful way of acknowledging and motivating people and making them feel special with his twinkling eyes and contagious smile." She continued, "I’ve met many inspirational young campers during my summers as a volunteer and senior counselor at Double H. I listen in awe to the stories of how Double H Ranch changed their perceptions of their abilities, and in many cases, their lives. I’ve watched as campers are encouraged to try new things, reach for new goals and stretch their limits. I’ve seen the joy on their faces as they succeed. It is my hope that this scholarship, in Dave's memory, will provide yet another source of encouragement to campers to reach for their dreams.
